The Republic of Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago and is the fifth most populous country, with 17,700 islands streching 5,120 kms (3,200 miles) between Australia and the Asian mainland. While it has land borders with Malaysia to the west as well as East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the east, it also has sea borders with Australia and East Timor to the south, Palau, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and India to the north.
